to portfolio, or to thesis?

Time for my almost-halfway through my graduate program freakout/breakdown! Ready? Neither am I.

It’s at this point in my program that we have to decide whether we want to complete a portfolio or a thesis. Now, despite what you may think, THIS IS A TREMENDOUS AND HUGELY INFLUENTIAL DECISION TO MAKE. This decision is the difference between a) ending my program with something that is possible publishable & b) a way too huge workload and a massive amount of work.

The school forces us, rightly so, to make this decision at the beginning of the Spring Quarter of our first year of the program, aka THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. Eek! So now it’s crunch time.

Oddly enough, the paper that I was planning to use as my major paper for my portfolio would kind of maybe be an alright jumping-off point for a thesis. Honestly, I’m not really sure. But I guess the point is that someone in the department tells me whether that’s even a viable option. I wrote what I thought to be a really impressive paper on the recontextualisation of archival materials for documentary film, and explored how, in one particular film, that affects the creation of the Jewish self-identity. See, impressive!

So I’m thinking that this might be something that could be easily(ish) expanded to 60-90 pages! #shootmenow
